Coming from me it might come across to be most ironical, but I see it as a solution to a lot of our problems (me included). But why not even once it has been given a casual thought, is because all the pundits want their children to have a lavish, cozy, risk-free life. Army life is tough, difficult, rough and governed by stringent rules. That kind of discipline in our lives could do wonder for the country.
Compulsory service in the army would mean that every young individual would have to spend 2 years of his life serving his country in the purest of ways. That kind of sacrifice is necessary to re-instigate the lost patriotism into the youth. It would help young lads and lasses right after their school or graduation to get themselves accustomed to the hardship the life will offer in the future.
I think the discipline imparted will massively improve the civilian behavior towards law of the land, cleanliness, and humility. But it would pose tremendous challenges as our so-called egalitarian society would not let everyone be treated the same, as is the case in the army.
The army is the best place to learn the true meanings of Unity, Equality, Leadership, Sacrifice, Honour, Pride, Trust, Respect, Team-Work and above all Patriotism, in practice. We have forgotten the true meaning of these virtues and need the services to teach us all of that. The ongoing debate about corruption, politics, loss of humility and humanity has brought the widespread malaises to the fore and by in large the institution which is most clean is our Defense services. So we need to learn from them, there is something that they are doing right and the bureaucracy isn't.
A lot of men amongst us are more than willing to give their all for the country but haven't been given the opportunity while there are others who think it's not their cup of tea. The elites find themselves in the latter category and they are the ones that need to learn the value of Honesty, Patriotism and Humility. The future bureaucrats, politicians, CEOs, activists all will then be from a similar background. They'll have a better understanding of each other.
A dose of army discipline and conduct is the panacea that the society today needs but obviously no one will even think of it as an option because it's too big a change. A change from the "chalta hai" attitude, a change from our comfortable lives, a change from the current rotten system, and most certainly a change from the way we live our lives. Like every other change, there would be resilience and hence no one is bold enough to give it a thought while so many countries successfully implement it. We always have and will continue to take our service men for granted.
“You cannot be disciplined in great things and indiscipline in small things. Brave undisciplined men have no chance against the discipline and valor of other men. Have you ever seen a few policemen handle a crowd?” ~ General George S. Patton Jr
