The common exclamation is often used to depict shock. Shock that may be pleasant or sad. Shock that maybe cause of an event or a news.
Oh my God! is an expression often been used to pity on the several plights of our nation. Be it at Taj Mahal, Gateway of India or elsewhere. People who come to India form the so called developed world to our land, often use this expression to sympathise with the conditions prevailing in "the real India." They pity on the conditions in the slums, curse the polluted cities, and frown on seeing the child labour. They despise every social aspect of our nation.
But, today India has forced them to use this expression for the impressive growth in our country. The "OMG! How do they live here?" has changed to "OMG! They are growing faster than us." The same expression has transformed in meaning. It's also the result of the amazing transformation we have brought about in our own economy. The era before and after the liberalisation in 1991 is starkly different from each other. This is also the amzing thing about our country that all this OMGs exist simultaneously.
The OMG The poor worker is so young! is just as true as OMG! Their work is so exquisite. The country with world's largest number of qualified engineers is also host to the largest illiterate population of the world. The country with the greatest diversity in the world also suffers from riots based on religion. India is a land of such contrast. This contrast as well as the diversity is matter of shock for people outside.
OMG How can they have 151 different languages! or OMG How can they have people of all the religions of the world living together! to OMG How can they think of building their own cryogenic engine? OMG How can they have world's largest number of child labours! to How can they be leaders in IT and BPOs.
There are so many things in India both good and bad that shock you. But when we look from our point of view, we are one of the world's happiest nation. A country that has successfully moved the largest number of people from below poverty line to above. The last Oh my God that we Indians want to hear is-
Oh my God! We are now a world Superpower. (but in the near future Oh my God! We won the world cup!)
