Awards can be bought, advertisements can be bought, brand ambassadors can be bought but what you can't buy is credibility. Current B-School rankings are lacking credibility. Rankings are supposed to be only an indicator of the quality of the B-School. I agree that judging and comparing various aspects of a B-School is very subjective, but the kind of variations that we see between the various rankings is astonishing. Some of the rankings defy common sense and general belief.
With rankings rating some newcomer school above IIMs, it defies all logic and only forces us to believe that they are bought and forged. With everyone coming up with their own ratings, no one has really developed a sort of credibility which is admired. Even if someone tries his level best to achieve the most accurate rating, separating a school at number 10 and 11 with accuracy is not possible. A B-school isn't just about placements or infrastructure or only academics. It's a conglomeration of so many things and the views are so subjective that a rating really has no meaning and accuracy.
Also, its impossible to treat all the courses offered by a B-School as equivalent. Different B-Schools are best known for their specialised courses. Comparing TISS and MICA is impossible. You can't say which one is better. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
In a world where you have "paid news" and commercial influence all over media, you can never trust a B-School ranking, rather its just another form of advertising. The best B-Schools don't need the rankings. They have built a name for themselves over the years. They rely on their merits and the environment. Their credibility is built over time and their products have stood the test in the globalised corporate world. This is the only acknowledgement one should seek.
“The only way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.”
