History Repeats

Nature has this strange way of running time in circles. The history keeps on repeating itself. Man, so many times fails to learn from its history and falls prey to similar situations. History repeating itself is a chance but mostly its our failure to learn from experiences and improve. Those who learn well from their glorious past could also seek inspiration from history and replicate it all over again. The recession of recent years was a case of history repeating itself as we hadn't quite learned enough. The sub-prime lending and audacity of the "big" banks, thought of to be too big to fall caused havoc in the global village. A similar event as that of the Great Depression, when the banks because of their careless attitude ended up falling down. The banks were again trusted this time for a responsible behaviour but the big shots like AIG, Lehmann Brothers couldn't prevent themselves. The history also saw India at the helm of the ancient civilised world. That hist

Purani Jeans aur Guitar

The iconic college song brings in nostalgia and takes you down memory lane into your college days. Being in the last year of college, we could most certainly identify what the symbolism represents. Youth that follows its passion and cares less for the orthodox. A new generation that has found for itself a profession in unconventional territory. It's about following your dream, following the passion and not caring what the world thinks. We Gen-next loves to make our own mistakes, but it's also why they learn so much so early in life. We are giving a new outlook on the conventional things. Bringing in a new perspective to everything whether new or old. A man who truly represents the spirit of Purani jeans and Guitar is Mr. Jairam Ramesh. The example might not match your imaginations but he captures the spirit perfectly. As someone who renewed a timid Department of the Government, into a visible and responsible force without caring about what others might feel about it. He has

Indian Growth is Resilient

The recent economic crisis proved the resilience of the Indian economy. The growth pattern of India is resilient. It sustained the worst of times and is also leading the recovery out of recession. The country which is relatively new to the open markets has shown great understanding and resilience in the difficult times for the world economy. The reasons that attribute to the already proven resilience as well as a sustainable economy for the future, are many. The Indian regulator , The Reserve Bank of India, has shown in these tough times that it's a responsible regulator and is shrewd in decidion making. The cautious approach of control and restrain which was earlier criticised by the free economies of the world, is now being applauded. The mix of control with freedom allowed India to be resilient and the effects from the other parts of the world were reduced. The Indian democracy is also an asset for the countries growth. The fact that it doesn't depend on one individual,

Gone are those days...

The early mornings and the evenings when you as ardent lovers of cricket filled the cricket fields, gone are those days. Children today love the Cricket and FIFA from the luxury of their couches. Gone are the days when watching TV was an exercise, now we have remotes. Gone are those days when you had 2 years wait list for landline connections, now its mobile in seconds. Gone are the days of tape recorders, now its iPods. Gone are the days when people looked at who's talking, now hey look at their phones and only hear you talking. Gone are the days of calmness, of ease, of subtle emotions and of life's little romances. Now, life's fast, instant, "on the go" and lost in competition. Everyone is now involved in a rat's race. A race that has no finish line. An endless race into the darkness. The real life is now lived in virtual world; but virtual, no matter how good, can never replace the real. "No news is good news." But what we have today is an ov

Mediocre But Arrogant

What a professional training at a good B-School does to you, is that it imparts in you a sense of confidence and self-belief in your own abilities not just to do a job, but being able to handle the most adverse of situations. This is important because the business world offers you challenge beyond the helm of technical knowledge and there you need to have the belief in yourself that you'll find some solution. The arrogance helps you to undermine the difficulties in your path and even a mediocre talent can finally make it, if he persists on the path putting in the hard work. The arrogance helps you in a lot of ways, it lets you stick to your ideas. If Edison had not been arrogant, we wouldn't have had electricity and if Mr. Sivaram Dugal had not been arrogant, we would not have had world class Clinical Research Institute in India. When you have firm belief in your idea, you need to be arrogant and stay firm on your stand. Even the best of people with the best of ideas falter

Food Security - A Myth

A person dying due to lack of food; death due to hunger is probably the most shameful thing for any nation. In our 63 years of independence we haven't even been able to provide food to our countrymen. The country's stats look pathetic in terms of Human Development Index. We might be 11th nation in terms of GDP but in terms of HDI we are at an absolute dismal 119, one of the worst, and some states doing even worse than African states which have been regarded as "failed state". Doesn't that mean we have failed in providing people with basics of life and yet we boast of 8.5% growth rates. The fact is that although we are growing at phenomenal rates but we have over 1 billion people to feed. This we haven't been able to achieve. The talk of the time is India Inc.- India Inclusive, but the growth has been anything but inclusive. 54% of our population is rural and they suffer from droughts, floods and depend largely on monsoons. It seems as if we have left it to t

B-School Rankings

Awards can be bought, advertisements can be bought, brand ambassadors can be bought but what you can't buy is credibility. Current B-School rankings are lacking credibility. Rankings are supposed to be only an indicator of the quality of the B-School. I agree that judging and comparing various aspects of a B-School is very subjective, but the kind of variations that we see between the various rankings is astonishing. Some of the rankings defy common sense and general belief. With rankings rating some newcomer school above IIMs, it defies all logic and only forces us to believe that they are bought and forged. With everyone coming up with their own ratings, no one has really developed a sort of credibility which is admired. Even if someone tries his level best to achieve the most accurate rating, separating a school at number 10 and 11 with accuracy is not possible. A B-school isn't just about placements or infrastructure or only academics. It's a conglomeration of so many
